A video was created to review using Bar Graphs to represent data and to answer problem solving questions. The video includes a powerpoint referencing the essential question, the CCSS, a short video clip from YouTube, the CUBS method of unpacking the problem, the problem posed and some of the possible strategies one could use to solve the problem.

hello boys and girls today we will be working on a new math problem in our math chapter 7 we have been working on measurement and data specifically we have been working on Kali charts or graphs and bar graphs we have learned over the last few weeks now. drink this that a bar graph shows data using bars a picture graph shows data use pictures another word for information is data and you can collect data by taking a survey right so those are things that we've learned and we learned how to read and use the three different types of graphs using graphs houses to organize and understand data quickly now I'm going to be showing you a little video from YouTube that shows how to use a bar graph to answer questions it's another teacher and should we go welcome back first directions to this is a bar graph and bar graph information so let's look at both sides of this crap here the first side has the number starting one going all the way up different categories categories are pencils erasers and things that are in pencil case 2672 e r in so what's the question question number one said how many tens are there in grass how many kingdoms are there how many deer are in pencil case all the way up here shoe three four five six goes all the way up right here number two call Leah right here how many pencils are there how many pens and pencils are there together it says how much are there together how many pins are there weather five six seven eight nine 10 11 12 13 the first one how many things are there in All In Chains pencil case are there in all how many are there how many tens and girls we just saw another teacher using a bar graph determine some answers to some questions that were that were given and we are going to be doing one of our own problems so now would be a really good time for you to go ahead and get your pencil and your paper something that you can write on to do the math problem so I'm going to give you a few seconds to do that while I set up are power to go and get something and get a drink or whatever get some more paper you can use the little pause button alright so here we go this this is called measurement and data that's the standard that we're working on and our essential question for this lesson is how do I make and read my Common Core State Standards measurement and data organize represent and interpret data figure it out understanding which up to three categories ask and answer questions about the total number of data points how much in each category and how maybe more or less are in one category than in another so our objective today is today I will be able ask and answer questions about the data given very good so take a look here at our Cubs poster I'm sure that you will had one that was similar to this in your classrooms and what we needed to do to unpack the question or to understand the question figure out what we're being asked to do was we first circles and numbers right then we underline the question and the weed box the labels and then finally we saw and showed a work to other people to the other students or to the whole class right so with their problem today but I'm going to ask you to do is to use your pencil in you're going to be taking some notes so right now what I'd like you to do is to write on your teeth tubs I want you to write Cubs I want to do just like this you ought not let me go on your paper so go ahead and do that because we're going to go through and notice it when the teacher in the previous video was underlined some important things some of those things that she was underlining was were words that we would normally box okay where can I use the one that we're familiar with or you can annotated anyway you like alright so I said remember you can pause it can and to solve this problem here's the problem listen carefully is collecting fruit to make a fruit salad for a class party Christopher has 6 apples Casey has 7 angles Cynthia has five bananas Kiara has four oranges Jana has three chairs our question is how many pieces of fruit have they collected for the party all together show your math work and send a picture to your teacher the extension is at the bottom and it is each of the children doubled what they brought how many pieces of fruit did the students collect I remember when we were doing these problems in the room as a whole group and we are making up our own ways to solve it we used our Cubs and we use Jerry strategy stop when you finish to finish the the main problem and you had answered the problem correctly you got a free if you had done the extension and made a good effort with that and you would burn a 401 k so the same would be for this now moving down to the next slide math strategies these are all scenes that weed used for had been using in the classroom some of them you saw the teacher use in the video so drawing a picture or a diagram okay when she counted up when she was using counting on she started out with a is four and then Fiona had three pairs right one 1 to 3 so we could have done it that way or we could have used making a graph or tally chart right could have done a tally chart in and some that in there so we could have gone with If instead Christopher Hatton six apples go 1-2-3 or cross for 5 and 6 we could have done that we could have done counting on right so we could have started over here right could have started with a 6 and had that in our head and then we could have need number line and then counted on so the next thing was Casey 7 so we could have gone and mounted on 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 right we could have used the algorithm like like the teacher did in the video and she did well if she had her own numbers but our numbers were 6 Plus 7 plus buy Nana's Plus 4 oranges plus three pairs right and then we would have had Tarbox here for our answer what we could have also done is we could have what's the numbers so what we could have done is find like this 6 + 7 right and then come up with the answer for that and then group this one 5 5 + 4 5 + 4 and then just added the three on so it was ended being here we would have gotten 13 plus 9 lost equals and then our answer box another thing that we could have done is making a ten using AR-10 stocks so instead of using this like this we could have said oh okay I know that 6 and 4 makes it 10 right and I know 7 + 3 makes it turn right and then we have a 5 left over that we can't forget and then we could have gone back and use the algorithm again after we came up with are making our tents and we could have gone and plus and more the seven in the three what the five more I'm off limits our answer right those are all different math strategies that we can all use to 2 solve our problems let's go back to our problem okay now let's use again like that you're going to be writing it on your paper right you're going to you you would normally Circle this and then write it on your paper so let's look four important numbers that we're going to circle all right so we start out with this one are we going to circle the 11 no cuz that's Room 11 that's not part of our problem that's extra. so what we're going to do is Wilderness Circle are important numbers Christopher has 6 apples so I'm going to circle at 6 AC has seven I'm going to circle at 7 Cynthia has five bananas so I am going to circle that 5 Ciara has four oranges so I'm going to circle that 4 cuz these are all pieces of fruit that we're looking for a right Fiona has three pairs so I'm going to circle that 3 now that was RC right we did RC now we need do you are you but cups so you underline our question so I'm going to underline the question here's our question how many pieces of fruit have they collected for the party altogether there's our question now RB right RB is r lathe we're going to box what is it that we're looking to come out here where we're looking to come the fruit so we're going to find where it says what we're looking to the Box we're looking to box a fruit so we're going to box that and now is your turn to solve the problem you can leave the stuff in closet so that you can get all your numbers down and then solve your problem take a picture of your solution and then send it to your teacher I'm sure they would love to see how you how you chose to focus all right well thank you very much aunt then thank you boys
